Have you ever wondered how the United Nations work and how countries negotiate issues among each other? The National Model United Nations (NMUN) offers the unique opportunity to gain first-hand insights into this topic.
The NMUN is the largest simulation of United Nations negotiations for students. Every year about 5000 students from all over the world attend the conference. The different delegations each represent a country or a non-governmental organization. The conference takes place in New York every year in spring. The opening and closing ceremonies are held at the UN headquarters. The rest of the conference will take place at the New York Hilton Midtown (6th Ave. at 53rd St.), where we will also have our accommodation.
Next year’s conference will be held from Friday, March 22 – Sunday, March 31, 2024.
Participiants from all fields of study who are interested in international relations and diplomacy are encouraged to apply.
Dr. Klara Sekanina, Director of the Swiss Study Foundation
Maïwenn Mignon (head delegate) & Markus Wagner (head delegate), students of the Swiss Study Foundation
Number of participants: 16 to 20
Working language: English for both the conference and preparatory meetings. Good English skills are therefore required from all applicants.
During the run-up to the conference in March, the delegation will prepare itself to represent the chosen country as realistically as possible. The preparation will be at times quite intensive, including at least four meetings, participation at which is mandatory.
1st meeting: Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 13:00 to 18:00 in Zurich. This meeting is meant for the delegates to get to know each other and to get an idea of what lies ahead of them.
2nd meeting: Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 09:00 to 18:00 in Lausanne.
3rd meeting: Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 13:00 to 18:00 in Biel/Bienne.
4th meeting: Friday, February 16, 2024, from 09:00 – Saturday, February 17, 2024, until 18:00 in Geneva or Bern. During this weekend a small-scale simulation of the NMUN will be carried out to make the delegates become acquainted with NMUN proceedings. If possible, a visit to the UN in Geneva will be included.
Costs: Each delegation member will have to pay CHF 600. The costs for meals and any other expenses have to be paid individually. Costs for flight, rooms and tuition fees are paid by the Swiss Study Foundation and external sponsors.
Place: New York City, USA
